The Clock Is Already Ticking
If your 65th birthday is six months away, now is exactly the right time to start thinking about how to prepare for Medicare. Not next month. Not after the holidays. Right now. The decisions you make in the months leading up to your birthday can shape your coverage, your costs, and your peace of mind for years to come. Here in Las Vegas, Nevada, we work with people every single day who wish they had started this process sooner — and we also work with people who got ahead of it and never looked back. This guide is for anyone who wants to be in that second group.
Understand What Medicare Actually Covers — and What It Doesn’t
Before you enroll in anything, you need to understand what you’re enrolling in. Medicare has several parts, and each one does something different.
Part A covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, and some home health care. Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A if they’ve worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. Part B covers outpatient care, doctor visits, and preventive services — and it does come with a monthly premium. Together, Parts A and B are called Original Medicare.
But here’s what surprises a lot of people: Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything. There are deductibles, coinsurance amounts, and gaps — including no cap on out-of-pocket costs. That’s why most people add either a Medicare Supplement plan (also called Medigap) or enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan to fill those gaps. Then there’s Part D for prescription drug coverage.
Understanding these basics six months out gives you time to research your options without feeling rushed. That’s exactly where you want to be.

Take a Close Look at Your Current Coverage
If you’re still working at 65 — or covered under a spouse’s employer plan — your situation has some extra layers to consider. In some cases, you may be able to delay enrolling in certain parts of Medicare without any penalty. In other cases, waiting is a costly mistake.
Pull out your current insurance card and find out exactly what your plan covers, who your employer is, and how many employees the company has. That last detail matters more than most people expect. Employer plans at companies with fewer than 20 employees work differently with Medicare than plans at larger companies do. Getting this wrong can mean gaps in coverage or unexpected penalties down the road.
Six months out is the right time to ask these questions — while you still have time to plan around the answers.
Start Gathering Your Information Now
Preparing for Medicare isn’t just about understanding the rules. It’s also about having the right paperwork in place when the time comes to enroll. Start by locating your Social Security card and birth certificate. You’ll also want to know your work history, since your Social Security record plays a role in determining your Part A eligibility.
If you’re not already receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll need to actively sign up for Medicare — it won’t happen automatically. You can enroll through Social Security online, by phone, or in person. Either way, knowing what you need ahead of time saves you from scrambling later.
Make a List of Your Doctors and Prescriptions
Not all Medicare plans cover the same doctors or the same medications. Before you pick a plan, write down every doctor you currently see and every prescription you take. This list is going to be your guide when comparing Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans. Plan networks and drug formularies vary — sometimes significantly — and choosing the wrong plan could mean losing access to providers you’ve trusted for years or paying much more for your medications than you expected.
Six months out, you have time to do this research carefully. Don’t skip this step.
Talk to a Local Medicare Advisor Before You Enroll
