What Every Nevada Resident Should Know About Medicare Part D
If you’ve been trying to wrap your head around Medicare Part D drug coverage as a Nevada resident, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common conversations we have with people right here in the Las Vegas area — from Henderson to Summerlin to North Las Vegas and everywhere in between. Part D seems simple enough on the surface until you actually sit down to compare plans, figure out which drugs are covered, and understand why your costs can vary so much from one plan to the next. Then the questions start piling up fast. Most people come in thinking Medicare handles their prescriptions automatically. It doesn’t — and that misunderstanding can be a costly one.
How Medicare Part D Actually Works
Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage. It’s offered through private insurance companies that are approved by Medicare, and it works alongside your Original Medicare (Parts A and B). If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, drug coverage is often bundled in — but not always. That’s one of the first things worth checking, because assuming you’re covered when you’re not is a mistake that shows up at the pharmacy counter at the worst possible time.
Each Part D plan has its own list of covered medications, called a formulary. Plans organize drugs into tiers, and the tier your medication sits on determines what you’ll pay. A generic drug on Tier 1 might cost you almost nothing. A brand-name specialty drug on Tier 5 is a very different story. Two plans can both be called “Medicare Part D” and cover completely different drugs at completely different costs. That’s why comparing plans based on your actual medications matters more than comparing monthly premiums alone.

The Part D Costs You Need to Understand
There are a few different costs involved with Part D, and it helps to understand each one before you choose a plan.
The monthly premium is what you pay just to have the coverage, regardless of whether you use it. Premiums vary widely by plan and by carrier. The deductible is what you pay out of pocket before the plan starts sharing costs — in 2024, the maximum deductible allowed is $545, though many plans set theirs lower or waive it entirely for certain drug tiers. Then there are copays and coinsurance, which are what you pay each time you fill a prescription after the deductible is met.
One more thing Nevada residents should know: if you’re eligible for Medicare but delay enrolling in Part D without having other creditable drug coverage, you may face a late enrollment penalty. That penalty gets added to your premium and follows you for as long as you have Part D. It’s one of those things that seems minor until you do the math over several years.
The Low-Income Subsidy — Extra Help for Those Who Qualify
If your income and resources fall below certain limits, you may qualify for the Extra Help program, also called the Low-Income Subsidy. This federal program helps cover Part D premiums, deductibles, and copays for people who qualify. It’s not talked about nearly enough, and in our experience working with seniors throughout the Las Vegas area, there are people every single year who were eligible and didn’t know it. Checking takes almost no time, and the savings can be significant — hundreds of dollars a year for some people.
Choosing the Right Part D Plan in Nevada
The right plan for your neighbor or your brother-in-law isn’t necessarily the right plan for you. It comes down to your specific medications, your preferred pharmacy, your budget, and how your Part D fits with the rest of your Medicare coverage. Nevada residents have access to a range of plans through Medicare’s marketplace, and the enrollment window matters — you generally have a set period each year during Open Enrollment (October 15 through December 7) to make changes.
Trying to compare plans on your own can feel overwhelming. The formularies are dense, the cost structures are layered, and one detail missed can mean paying far more than you should.
