A Question Worth Asking Before You Enroll
Medicare Supplement vs Medicare Advantage — which saves you more money — is one of those questions that sounds simple until you start digging into the details. The honest answer is that it depends on your health, your habits, and how you plan to use your coverage. But what we can tell you is this: the wrong choice can cost you hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars a year. And in Las Vegas, Nevada, where we work with seniors every single day, we see the consequences of that choice play out in real time.
Here is what you need to understand before you decide.
What Each Plan Actually Does
Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans both work alongside Original Medicare, but they work in very different ways.
A Medicare Advantage plan — sometimes called Part C — replaces your Original Medicare entirely. The private insurance company manages your benefits, often bundles in Part D drug coverage, and may include extras like dental, vision, and hearing. Most Advantage plans have low or even zero monthly premiums, which is what tends to catch people’s attention first.
A Medicare Supplement plan — also called Medigap — does not replace Original Medicare. Instead, it fills in the gaps. Medicare pays its share of a covered service, and your Supplement plan picks up what is left — things like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. You pay a monthly premium for that protection, but your out-of-pocket exposure is dramatically reduced.

Where the Real Cost Difference Shows Up
This is where most people get surprised. A Medicare Advantage plan with a low monthly premium can look very attractive on paper. But what matters just as much — and sometimes more — is the plan’s out-of-pocket maximum, its network restrictions, and what you actually pay when you use the plan.
If you are relatively healthy and rarely need specialist visits or hospital stays, an Advantage plan may genuinely cost you less over the course of a year. The math works in your favor when you are not using a lot of care.
But if you have ongoing health conditions, see multiple doctors, or end up in the hospital even once, the cost-sharing under an Advantage plan can add up fast. Copays for each specialist visit, daily hospital costs, and coinsurance for procedures can push your real costs well above what a Medicare Supplement plan would have cost you with its higher monthly premium.
Medicare Supplement plans — particularly Plan G, which is one of the most popular options we discuss with clients here in Las Vegas — offer predictable costs. You know what you are paying each month. You know what your exposure is. For many people, that predictability is worth every dollar.
Networks, Freedom, and Access to Care
There is another cost that does not always show up in premium comparisons: access. Medicare Advantage plans typically use provider networks. If your doctor is not in-network, you may pay significantly more or need to find someone new. Depending on where you live and the plan you choose, network limitations can become a real issue.
Medicare Supplement plans work with any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare — which is most providers across the country. That flexibility matters, especially for seniors who travel, snowbird between states, or simply want to keep seeing the doctors they trust.
So Which One Actually Saves You More?
The truthful answer is that it depends on you specifically. Your health history. Your budget. How often you use healthcare. Whether you value a lower premium now or lower costs when something goes wrong. Neither plan is universally better — but one of them is almost certainly a better fit for your situation.
What we know from working with seniors across Las Vegas and Nevada is that most people benefit from sitting down with someone who can walk through the numbers with them — not just the premium, but the full picture of what each plan would actually cost based on how they live.
