Medicare Supplement vs Medicare Advantage: Which Saves You More Money?

A Question Worth Getting Right

If you’ve been trying to figure out the difference between Medicare Supplement vs Medicare Advantage and which one actually saves you more money, you are asking one of the most important questions you can ask before stepping into retirement. These are two very different paths, and the one you choose will shape how you access care, how much you pay out of pocket, and how much financial stress — or peace of mind — you carry into your later years. At Walker Insure Advisors, we believe every person in our community deserves a clear, honest answer, so let’s walk through this together and help you figure out which option makes the most sense for you.

Understanding the Basics First

Before we can talk about cost, it helps to understand what each plan actually is. Original Medicare — Parts A and B — covers a lot, but it does not cover everything. That gap is where both Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage come in, just in very different ways.

A Medicare Supplement plan, sometimes called Medigap, works alongside your Original Medicare. You keep your Medicare, and the Supplement plan picks up many of the costs that Medicare leaves behind — things like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. You pay a monthly premium for that coverage, but when you actually need care, your out-of-pocket expenses are often very low or even nothing at all, depending on the plan you choose.

A Medicare Advantage plan, also known as Part C, works differently. Instead of working alongside Original Medicare, it replaces it. A private insurance company approved by Medicare delivers all of your Part A and Part B benefits through their plan. Most Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage and extras like dental, vision, and hearing benefits. Many plans have low or even zero monthly premiums, which makes them look very attractive at first glance.

Where the Real Cost Comparison Gets Interesting

Here is where a lot of Las Vegas seniors get tripped up. When people hear “zero premium,” they naturally assume they are getting a better deal. But the monthly premium is only one piece of the puzzle, and often not the most important one.

With Medicare Advantage, you may pay little to nothing each month, but when you need care — especially serious care — you will typically face copays, coinsurance, and annual out-of-pocket maximums that can reach several thousand dollars. For 2024, the out-of-pocket maximum for Medicare Advantage plans can be as high as $8,850 for in-network services. If you are someone who uses a lot of healthcare, those costs add up quickly.

With a Medicare Supplement plan, you pay a higher monthly premium — often anywhere from $100 to $300 or more depending on your age, the plan letter, and where you live here in Nevada — but your costs when you actually use your insurance are much more predictable. For many people, especially those managing chronic conditions or who simply want to know exactly what they will owe when they walk out of a doctor’s office, that predictability is worth every penny.

So Which One Actually Saves You More?

The honest answer is: it depends on you. And that is not a dodge — it is the truth that every good Medicare advisor should be willing to say out loud.

If you are in excellent health, rarely visit the doctor, and want to keep your monthly expenses low, a Medicare Advantage plan may genuinely be the more affordable choice. Many healthy seniors in Las Vegas go years without hitting their out-of-pocket maximum, which means they come out ahead financially.

But if you have ongoing health needs, take multiple prescription medications, or simply want the freedom to see any doctor in the country without worrying about networks or referrals, a Medicare Supplement plan often saves you significantly more in the long run. The peace of mind alone has real value — and so does knowing that a major health event will not drain your savings.
