What Every Las Vegas Senior Should Know About Social Security
If you’ve been trying to wrap your head around social security basics for Las Vegas seniors, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common conversations we have with people right here in the valley — from Summerlin to Henderson to North Las Vegas and everywhere in between. Social Security seems straightforward until you actually sit down to figure out when to claim, how much you’ll get, and how it fits with your Medicare coverage. Then the questions start piling up fast.
Most people spend decades paying into the system and assume the benefits side will be simple. It rarely is. But once you understand the fundamentals, you can make decisions that protect your income and your retirement for the long haul.
When Can You Start Collecting — and Should You?
You can begin collecting Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62. But earlier isn’t always better. If you claim at 62, your monthly benefit is permanently reduced — sometimes by as much as 30 percent compared to what you’d receive at your full retirement age.
Your full retirement age depends on when you were born. For most seniors currently approaching retirement, that age is 66 or 67. And if you can wait even longer — all the way to age 70 — your benefit grows by about 8 percent for every year you delay past full retirement age. That’s a meaningful difference over a 20 or 25 year retirement.
For Las Vegas seniors living on a fixed income, that monthly number matters. A lot. Taking time to understand your options before you claim can add up to tens of thousands of dollars over your lifetime.

How Your Benefit Amount Is Calculated
The Social Security Administration calculates your benefit based on your 35 highest-earning years. If you worked fewer than 35 years, they count zeros for the missing years, which pulls your average down. If you worked more than 35 years, the lower-earning years get dropped out automatically.
That’s why some people find it worthwhile to keep working a few extra years even part-time — replacing a zero or a low-income year with a stronger one can bump up your monthly check more than you might expect.
You can check your projected benefit anytime by creating a My Social Security account at ssa.gov. It only takes a few minutes and gives you a clear picture of where things stand right now.
Social Security and Medicare — How They Work Together
Here in Nevada, a lot of seniors are surprised to learn how closely Social Security and Medicare are connected. If you’re already collecting Social Security when you turn 65, you’ll typically be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B automatically. If you’re not collecting yet, you’ll need to sign up on your own during your Initial Enrollment Period.
One thing that catches people off guard is that your Medicare Part B premium is usually deducted directly from your Social Security check. For 2024, the standard Part B premium is $174.70 per month — though higher-income beneficiaries may pay more through what’s called IRMAA.
Understanding how these two programs interact helps you budget more accurately and avoid surprises when those first payments start hitting your bank account.
Spousal and Survivor Benefits Las Vegas Seniors Often Overlook
If you’re married, divorced, or widowed, there may be additional benefits available to you that have nothing to do with your own work history. Spouses can claim up to 50 percent of their partner’s benefit. Surviving spouses may be eligible for 100 percent of what their deceased spouse was receiving. Even certain divorced spouses qualify if the marriage lasted at least 10 years.
These rules are more nuanced than they sound, and making the wrong claiming decision can cost you real money. It’s worth talking through your specific situation with someone who knows these programs inside and out.
