Turning 65 and Still Working in Tennessee: Do You Need Medicare Right Now?

A Question More Tennessee Seniors Are Asking Than You Might Think

If you are turning 65 and still working in Tennessee, you are not alone. More Americans than ever are staying in the workforce well past 65, and in a state with as much economic variety as Tennessee, that is especially true. Whether you are working in Nashville’s booming healthcare and tech corridor, out along the manufacturing hubs near Memphis, in Knoxville’s growing professional sector, or commuting across any of the smaller communities that make this state so distinct, you may already be covered through your employer and wondering whether Medicare is something you need to deal with right now.

The answer is not the same for everyone. And getting it wrong can cost you real money — in penalties and gaps in coverage that follow you for years after you eventually do retire.

The Big Question: Is Your Employer Coverage Considered Creditable?

When people think about turning 65, many assume Medicare enrollment is automatic or mandatory. It is not. The real question is whether the health insurance you have through your job is considered creditable coverage — meaning it is at least as good as Medicare’s standard benefits.

If you are working for a company with 20 or more employees, your employer plan is almost always considered primary coverage. In that situation, you generally have the option to delay Medicare enrollment without facing any penalties later on. You have a protected window called a Special Enrollment Period that allows you to sign up when your employment or employer coverage ends.

This is good news for a lot of working Tennesseans who are not ready to retire and do not want to pay Medicare premiums on top of what they are already contributing through their employer plan.

When You Should Think Carefully Before Waiting

That said, there are situations where delaying Medicare can backfire, even when you are still working.

Smaller Employers Change the Equation

If your employer has fewer than 20 employees, Medicare actually becomes your primary coverage at 65 — whether you realize it or not. In that case, your employer plan pays secondary. If you have not enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B, your employer plan may pay very little, and you could end up with significant out-of-pocket costs you were not expecting.

Medicare Part A Is Usually Free — And Often Worth Taking

Most people who have worked and paid into the system for at least 10 years will owe no premium for Medicare Part A, which covers hospital stays. In most cases, it makes sense to enroll in Part A at 65 even if you are keeping your employer coverage for everything else. There are some exceptions — particularly if you are contributing to a Health Savings Account — so it is worth reviewing your specific situation before making that call.

Practical Action Steps for Tennessee Seniors Turning 65

If you are approaching 65 and still working, here is what you should be doing right now:

  • Talk to your HR department. Ask specifically how many employees your company has and how your plan coordinates with Medicare. Get it in writing if you can.
  • Check whether you contribute to an HSA. If you do, enrolling in any part of Medicare — including Part A — will stop your ability to make tax-free HSA contributions.
  • Mark your calendar. Your Initial Enrollment Period spans the three months before your birthday month, your birthday month itself, and three months after. Missing it without qualifying for a Special Enrollment Period leads to penalties.
  • Do not assume the penalty clock is not running. Late enrollment penalties for Part B and Part D are calculated based on how long you went without qualifying coverage. A conversation now can protect you from a surprise later.

Tennessee Has Its Own Landscape — And Your Situation Is Unique to You

From the Greater Nashville area to Chattanooga, from the tri-cities region in the northeast to the rural counties spread across West Tennessee, working Tennesseans have widely different employer situations, income levels, and health needs. There is no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to Medicare timing, which is exactly why getting personalized guidance matters more than reading a general checklist.

I'm excited to be part of the team at Walker Insurance Advisors bringing with me 6 years of comprehensive experience in the insurance industry. Over the past two years, l've specialized in Medicare, helping clients navigate their options to find the best coverage for their needs. Prior to that, I spent two years focused on ACA (Affordable Care Act) plans, providing individuals and families with the guidance they need to secure affordable healthcare solutions. I got started in the insurance industry at the beginning of COVID and it couldn't have come at a better time. I was able to understand what health insurance plans were saying in plain English for the first time in my life. I was hooked. I then went on to acquire my life, property and casualty lines and have worked in all fields before making the decision to specialize in the health insurance industry. Beyond my professional life, I'm dedicated to my family and enjoy spending time crafting, gardening, and cooking/baking for my family. I'm passionate about helping others protect what matters most, whether it's their health, their finances, or their future. I look forward to continuing to support our clients here at Walker Insurance Advisors with tailored insurance solutions that meet their unique needs.
