Your Doctor Might Not Be in the Network — and That Changes Everything
If you’re exploring Medicare Advantage plans in Nevada, one of the most important things you need to understand before you enroll is how provider networks work. It’s not just fine print. It’s the difference between seeing your preferred doctor and starting over with someone new. Here in Las Vegas, where new Medicare Advantage plans enter the market regularly and carrier networks shift from year to year, understanding what you’re signing up for can save you a lot of frustration — and a lot of money.
Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Unlike Original Medicare, which lets you see any provider who accepts Medicare nationwide, most Medicare Advantage plans require you to use a specific network of doctors, hospitals, and specialists. Step outside that network, and you may pay significantly more — or find that your plan won’t cover the visit at all.
The Different Types of Medicare Advantage Networks in Nevada

Not all Medicare Advantage networks are built the same way. In Nevada, you’ll typically encounter three main types, and each one works a little differently.
HMO Plans
Health Maintenance Organization plans are the most common type you’ll find in the Las Vegas area. With an HMO, you select a primary care physician who coordinates your care and provides referrals when you need to see a specialist. In most cases, you’ll need to stay within the plan’s network to have your care covered. These plans often come with lower premiums, but the tradeoff is less flexibility in who you can see.
PPO Plans
Preferred Provider Organization plans give you more freedom. You can see out-of-network providers, but you’ll typically pay more when you do. PPO plans tend to have higher premiums than HMOs, but for seniors who travel frequently or have established relationships with specific specialists, that flexibility can be worth it. Nevada does have PPO options available, though they vary by county and insurer.
PFFS and Special Needs Plans
Private Fee-for-Service plans and Special Needs Plans round out the options available in parts of Nevada. SNPs are specifically designed for people with certain chronic conditions, dual Medicare and Medicaid eligibility, or those living in institutional settings. If you fall into one of those categories, a SNP may offer more tailored coverage than a standard plan.
Why Network Changes Matter More Than You Might Think
Here in Nevada, we see this happen every single year. A senior enrolls in a Medicare Advantage plan because it covered their cardiologist or their oncologist. Then January 1st arrives, and that provider is no longer in the network. Sometimes plans quietly drop physicians mid-year. Sometimes hospitals change their contracting relationships. And unless you’re paying close attention, you may not find out until you’re already sitting in a waiting room.
That’s why reviewing your plan’s provider directory every single year — not just when you first enroll — is so important. During the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from October 15th through December 7th, you have the opportunity to switch plans if your current network no longer meets your needs. Don’t assume that what worked last year still works today.
What to Look For Before You Choose a Plan
Before you commit to any Medicare Advantage plan in Nevada, take the time to verify a few key things. Confirm that your primary care doctor and any specialists you see regularly are in the plan’s network and accepting new patients. Check that the hospitals and urgent care facilities you’d realistically use are included. Look at the plan’s service area — some networks are more robust in Henderson or Summerlin than in other parts of the valley. And don’t forget to review prescription drug coverage, because your medications matter just as much as your doctors.
These details can feel overwhelming when you’re sorting through them on your own. That’s exactly why having a knowledgeable local advisor in your corner makes such a difference.
